I took a chance on a Ferguson TO30 yesterday. Bought it with out knowing if it ran only that it turned over. Some Cleaning and wiring, I have it running .I was told that it needed 3rd and reverse replaced. When I got there the shifter would not move. I aligned all shift rods so it was now in N. I got it running It has 1,2, ,4, . I got it home removed shifter plate the shifter has bad wear, i see no Broken gears or missing teeth. I can now move the shifter in to all gears S does not stay and i am not sure it is suppose to. I put it 3rd and reverse I went fishing with a magnet found some 3 teeth androllers out of a bearing. I am looking for a book with the information to rebuild any suggestions?

The IT Shop Service manuals have basic instructions and good pictures for transmission overhaul. Used ones are available on Ebay at a good price. Transmissions are tricky, require concentration and attention to detail to get one apart and successfully back together. Guess I'm saying it helps to think outside the box! LOL

Parts are expensive, but not a place to be cutting corners. Good used parts are OK, sometimes that's the only option, sometimes better than aftermarket. One area that experience is very valuable is deciding what is acceptable and what is not as far as wear. If you are in doubt, ask questions, post pictures, be sure!

It can not stay in 'S' without your hand keeping it there, or you will ruin the starter, bendix or flywheel teeth.
Allis Chalmers were all famous for 'poppin outta 3rd'.... just wore out before the rest of the numbers. I rarely use 3rd on my TO30's, or any of the others for that matter, just not a handy speed for what I do with em.
So for now, just be happy it's running and rolling for what you paid. Yep, get some manuals, on sale on this site's YT online shop too, and good luck with it.

This site sells the TO20/TO30 service book which should tell you how to take apart and reassemble the transmission. I have never done it, but it says to be ready to catch lots of needle bearings when removing shafts. Sounds like fun!

I appreciate the info I was unsure of the S operation. I was a mechanic for many years. I have become disable so i can not function in a work enviroment capacity. I have rebuild many transmissions manual and standards. looking through the top makes me think of B&W toploader. The best part it has alot less parts than a T5. Thanks for info on the manual I couldn't tell if it contained the info i needed.
