I would like to have a tractor at our small property in upstate PA. (tioga county) I was going to take one of my 35's there but I recently sold my trailer and I have a few extra bucks on hand. there is a Kubota dealership about half an hour away from the property and I am thinking used orange. but here is my question. the machine would sit for weeks and even months at a time outside (covered with tarp) and I am wondering given that the machine would be inactive quite a bit would a gasoline or diesel engine be the best way to go.
thanks.

Well... why did you sell your trailer? The last thing you ever sell is a trailer...
Orange is going to cost you 10 times as much, up front and repairs, maintaining. Ask the dealer what a good used 35 hp model will cost. You will afford a new trailer and a few more 35's for what he will want for something half worn out.
And without 4wd, the little ones are -little, even more limited than a 30. ask me how I know.
I suppose laying in mothballs, with staybilz, it won't make a difference.

(quoted from post at 10:47:43 04/27/15) staybilz can be added to diesel?

I dont know why you would want to, diesel doesnt degrade like gasoline.. As long as it is filtered and run through a water separator, run it.
I have taken many free barrels of diesel from people who thought they were unloading waste to a sucker, then let it settle and pump it straight into my machines through a Racor unit.

Btw, the active ingredient in fuel stabilzers is BHT. Same stuff that is used to preserve food. Buy it at a health food store, add up to 1/4 teaspoon per gallon. With a small fleet of gas engines and power tools, that saves me a lot of cash.

So, is the new low sulfur diesel the same as far as shelf life? What if it's mixed with bio diesel? Reason I asked, helped get a gen set running, it was NOS, left siting a couple years with fuel in the system. The injector pump was gummed with white something, nothing seemed to cut it. Finally wiped, scraped, scrubbed it out enough to get it running. So far so good!

Funny I just had a conversation yesterday with a guy about his mid-80s Kubota diesel. He really didn't recommend it. To my surprise it doesn't have live pto, for one thing. The diesel in the cold winter gives him grief; he has had the head off and planed, but worst of all, for him, he says the clutch is so stiff it wears out your leg.

But that's one guy, with one mid-80s Kubota, 20-something hp.
It was a good conversation though because I initiated it thinking just maybe he'd be ready to sell. By the end I didn't want to buy. Now that I have a 35 with live pto, I ain't going back!

I'm with Tony.. WTH were you thinking selling a trailer.

Now, back to your predicament... how far away from Tioga county are your 35s?

the A-HOLE that gave me 50 bucks to hold my trailer for him backed out of the deal. good thing I did NOT order the tandem axle trailer I was looking at earlier today.

See? There really is a God! Don't do that again.
My trailer is 27 years old and still paying for itself. And all the parts it may need are still in production and on a shelf.... lights that light? that's a different story...

I have 24 hp orange purchased from fathers estate. He purchased new in 1978. Does not get lots of use anymore. Suggest you keep DIESEL stable and anti slime additive ( I use product called Killem) in fuel. Non bio diesel best but purchase it with as little bio % as you can find. Keep fuel tank full during inactive periods to keep out moisture. I have 4 other diesel orange 14 hp garden tractors. Orange diesel tractors are cold blooded to start. Doesn't matter if its summer. You'll need to run glow plugs for 1st start of the day. Had very few problems with orange tractors. Don't skimp on a battery for a disel. Diesel has to spin to start. Never had to use ether on my orange tractors. The 24 horse I use for snow blowing. Starts at below zero temps.

I currently have...6 oops, 7 trailers. Two tandem, one total flat deck. Two boat, Single axle for sale. One pick up bed/scrap carrying trailer. A Harbor junk 4X8 folding trailer that I got for free after repairing the tongue.
A 4X6 wood side trailer. Oregon requires registration if the trailer and cargo exceed 1800 Lbs.
Basically tandem axles and above.
Hope you kept your $50 deposit.
