transmission oil

Why is there always an argument over there as to what oil to put in the transmission of your Ferguson tractors? We never have that argument here in the UK.....We always use 15W30 universal oil with no problems and this is all we were ever recommended to use by MF......So we don't know
anything else....Thus we cannot argue about it ....LOL

I guess it's because the Ferguson manual that came with the tractor says to use 90 winter, 80 weight summer, mineral oil.
The only 90 weight mineral oil I found was at NAPA.
I am only assuming it's because gl-1 mineral oil is a non detergent oil.

Why did they do that, I don't know: my tractor is a 1957 TO35

I am only starting to see a few oils sold as multi weight, non detergent oil, sold at home depot for their lawn mower engines and only in qts.

I think a lot of the questions is due to the fact that in my opinion a lot of the yt users do not know how or are afraid to use the wonderful archives that yt has provided to these forums so they think it is easier to ask another question rather than look it up.

Here's a link to a Ferguson TEA-20 Manual on the 1260 Engineer website. Interesting reading, and the lubrication specifications appear to be similar to those shown in the TO-20 Manual.

Notwithstanding the recommendations in the Manual(s), I suspect most of us use multi-viscosity oil in our engines these days, rather than the straight mineral oil specified.

That said, I refilled my transmission/hydraulics with GL-1 last fall, and it was really slow this winter. I may try something else in a year or two.

I thought it was a problem with non detergent oil verses detergent oil.
The non detergent oil lets the dirt particles fall to the bottom of the sump, the detergent oil keeps the dirt particles suspended so they can be taken out as they past through the oil filter.

Since we do not have a transmission hydraulic oil system filter, then we needed non detergent oil, so the dirt would be taken out when the oil was drained.

I understand they have non detergent multi grade oil in England, the only non detergent multi grade oil I have ever seen here was at home depot for their lawn mowers (power service) brand, only sold in quart containers.

All that said, the GL-1 oil in my tractor is very thick in the winter which makes the lift slow to work on a cold day, I do not like that, but by the time the motor is warmed up the lift is ready to go, so it works out.

I want to change the oil out someday, but I am concerned with the old pump so worn, with thinner oil it might not pump properly, at least it still works.
