some easy questions for you gents

Guys please bear with me but I am really new to this so I hope this is not too trivial for you gentlemen
1. I believe I found the hole for the cotter key, It is under the tractor on bell housing. It is a circular hole about 1/4 of an inch in diameter.. I put a tooth pick to see it it was clogged and all seemed okay... Do I have it right? Did a little brush hogging just to get the feel of things and all seemed well. Put it back in my garage and no leaks on floor anywhere. guess my first tractor is pretty good.

2. All gauges work.. oil pressure is 40, temperature is 170 and ammeter needle is a few lines past center while operating which is about 10, My concern is the tractormeter. It does nothing. Is there a way to troubleshoot it ? seems to be the original one. ( Tractor is a 1955 TO35 deluxe.) Or should I just opt for a tachometer and hour gauge?

One thing to check, voltage regulator, if battery is properly charged, normally the
needle will run center,

Only show charge after starting.

Do not want your battery to be over charged.

Turn your lights on and see if the needle kicks back.

My mistake charges after starting then centers.. Thanks Max

Is that a simple replacement part. I was also thinking of putting the cable in a varible speed drill and run it slowly to see if the indicator moves. But I'll wait for advice on that... dont want to ruin anything... Thanks 1948jr

My TO 35 only has one hole in the bell housing for the cotter pin, the TO 20 and TO 30 have two holes. I think you found where the cotter pin should be.

Thanks Richard. So i should check it from time to time and make sure is not clogged up. is that about it?

1948 .... I disconnected the cable at the generator. The cable spins freely by hand and I could feel it at the tractormeter. on the generator side I didnt notice anything strange. Is the plastic gear inside the generator. I did notice a white plastic hub where the cable enters the generator, Is that the gear?

It sounds odd but you can replace the cotter pin without splitting the tractor . The round head of the pin is reasonably springy and so if you match a pin head slightly larger than the hole it can be forced in with little trouble . Once in ,the action of bending the legs of the pin outwards increases the size of the head . A nice reasonably tight fit working the way it should for almost no effort .

After reading what Charles wrote, I can see where he has a good idea. If you are able to follow his description and get it installed the way he says then you should only have to check it once in a great while. If you cannot install it per Charles instructions then yes check it when ever you fill up with fuel, or every once in a while.

And if you can't squeeze a cotter pin in from the outside, I think you'd be able to remove the inspection plate (just forward of the drain hole) and sneak one in with some long needle nose pliers. Had the inspection plate off my TO35 a few days ago to remove pieces of broken starter gear (not sure what happened there) and felt around a bit. I think it would be possible.
