Just bought a TO 20 Ferguson a short time ago and nowstarting to do a little work on it,I finally got it running sounds pretty good,so I knew gen was bad so decided to replace with an alternator,so I bought a 6volt alt, made a bracket and installed it,but now my problem is I cant get it to charge, new 6volt alt,new 6volt batt, new 6volt coil,, will not charge or discharge, took alt back to auto parts had it tested and it was charging great 7 volts, but cant figure out why it wont charge when I put it back on tractor, sure do need some advise, maybe a diagram would help,,

Is this a "one wire" alternator? If so, the large terminal will connect to the non-grounded side of the battery (through the ampmeter if equipped).

If it's a 3 wire Delco 10-SI, this is the diagram: http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/LR.images/DelcoWiring.jpg

Alternators are polarity specific. It is essential to have the polarity correct, the alternator case should be stamped either positive or negative ground.

Also, some alternators need to be revved quite high to start charging. The smaller the pulley, the better.
