I see someone ask from time to time how to get their gears unlocked on a old TO35.

its been many years since my old tractor gears locked, that I do not remember the proper unlocking procedure.

I answered the mans request for help like this, but then after I answered, I thought I better ask you guys as I might be passing along bad information.

my answer: sometimes no information is better than bad information, but I did unlock the transmission a number of times over the years and also helped unlock a MF175 once.

if I pasted along the wrong info please advise, so I can correct my mistake and file correct procedure for future use.

Before you do anything

Try this.
First thing, have tractor on level ground,
small h/l gear shifter in neutral position.
Take transmission oil fill cap off, located by main gear shifter.
Insert a long screw driver, now with gentle to medium pressure try to pry the shifter slides back and forth.
Hopefully, you can release the binding shifter slides. 95% of the time you can release the binding shifter slides.

As I understand the problem: as the shifter slides get old and worn,
When shifting from forward to reverse or reverse to forward, if you pull up on the shifter rod as you are shifting, you can cause the shifter rods/slides to cross, they just have to be pried apart.

When you get the shifter rods back in position, you must {retrain} yourself how to shift an old fergy tractor.
(YOU CAN NOT PULL UP ON THE SHIFTER ROD AS YOU ARE SHIFTING)

THIS NORMALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING BACK IN REVERSE AND STOP TO SHIFT TO A FORWARD GEAR, YOUR BODY GOES BACK AND YOU PULL UP ON THE SHIFTER ROD AS YOU SHIFT.
RESULT, LOCKED GEARS.

GOOD LUCK,
