Air filter mesh

Bought some metal mesh from this site for my air cleaner. Any tips on the best way to get old stuff out and new in? Do you just pull the old out with a need nose pliers and a hook and then stuff in the new mesh? I ordered it AFTER I saw the recent post on how to clean it by immersing the whole canister in kerosene. Now that I have, might as well use it.

You should see either three or four spot welds that holds the ring onto the inside of the air cleaner. I took a small drill and drilled out those spot welds then took a knife and slid it between the cleaner and that thin piece of metal that holds the steel wool in and tapped the knife a few times to finish cutting the spot welds. After you replace the steel wool line the holes back up and use a pop rivet gun to attach the two parts back together. Choose a drill bit the size of your pop rivets you will use to finish the project. Hope this makes sense. It really is easy.

I did the needle nose pliers and screw driver method. took me about 30 min. to get the old crap out. I just stuffed new material in with screwdriver and putty knife. I had soaked the air filter in kero for over six months. did not do a thing to loosen up the old stuff. the old stuff was really packed with dirt, grime oil and whatever else was in there. it was so packed with crud that even after six months the it was dry next to the inner wall of the canister.
good luck and have fun !
btw: I used stainless steel pot scrubbing material to re-pack canister.

Wrap the mesh around the cardboard tube from a paper towel roll. Place the carboard tube over the metal tube in the air filter and slid the new mesh into the canister. The paper towel tube will act as a guide and help install the mesh evenly. That's how I did it and wasn't that big of a job. Cleaning out with kerosene did not work for me as the filter was full of cottonwood down as well as dirt. It probably hadn't been cleaned since the 1950's. Hope it helps.
