TO30 Leaking trans

I'm a new member to this site. I just recently mowed some heavy thick sticky clover. When I got finished I notice a good size leak coming from the bottom of trans housing. It is leaking through a hole that has a cotter key hangning out of the hole.

Its always had a small drip over time but it is really dripping now.
Any help would be appreciated. I got this good old tractor from my dad's passing. He had it for years. I drove it when I was a kid in the early 60's :)
Thanks,
James

I have a TO35 and it does the same thing.

on the transmission dip stick it has a low or add fluid mark and a full mark.

I try to keep the fluid at the mid level, that has worked on my tractor for years.

the cotter key was designed to turn as you pass through grass and keep the drain hole open.
my old cotter key got torn off, broke off, whatever,

so far I have not determined how to insert a new one from inside the transmission housing down so the legs of the key stick out.

I got the tractor stuck one year and the hole got plugged with mud, did not drive in any grass for a while, the oil leakage built up inside the housing and got on my clutch, very expensive mistake.

the little cotter key is one of your best friends on a old Fergy, you need to check it from time to time and be sure its free and working.

If it's transmission oil, it's coming from the front transmission seal. Easy fix... Once the tractor is split!

The engine rear main will also leak into the bell housing. Still have to split the tractor to repair it, but a rear main seal replacement is much more involved. Leaking rear main is usually associated with a generally worn engine.

But if you do go in after it, look everything else over while you're in there... Clutch, release bearing, flywheel gear.

how much is a "good size" leak? most of these old machines drip from somewhere. it comes down to how much a leak and how much it bugs you.

Thanks very much for the quick reply. My mistake---- It's a TO35 instead of a a TO30  if that makes any diff?
You raised another question about checking the Clutch, release bearing, flywheel gear. The clutch seems to be working properly except when I try to engage the PTO. I've got to reduce the rpm to almost stalling to keep it from gear grinding. Is that something that has to do with the clutch not working properly because it works fine during regular gear changing?
Thanks
James

The others have answered your question. One thing to keep in mind, do not plug the hole. As noted, if it isn't too bad, you
might just live with it (assuming the clutch is ok).
