I recently bought a '52 TO30 to mow about 6 acres with and to piddle. It ran great when I bought it but it has recently developed a fairly significant miss. The tractor idles fine and seems to run fine throughout the throttle range, but when it's under load with the mower, it starts missing so bad that it becomes unusable. I know this is incredibly broad, but what are sine of the more common things that I should check out first?

Check your point gap and check the distributor shaft bushings for wear. If the bushing is worn the points will not stay properly set. Also look at the plugs, replace them if you haven't already. Look at the plug wires, cap, rotor.

Does partially pulling the choke make it better or worse? If it makes it better, it's too lean. If it makes it worse, the mix is probably OK.

What does the exhaust look/smell like?

Black smoke is a sign of too rich, flooding carb, choke not opening fully, air cleaner clogged (check the upper housing, the horse hair part, for blockage).

White misty, raw gas, eye burning exhaust is a sign of miss fire. Usually ignition related, or compression related, but since it idles well not likely to be compression.
