If the owner will let you, bring a wrench and loosen the oil drain plug, see if antifreeze comes out. That "could" be a sign of a cracked block, but it could also be a head gasket, or cylinder liner oring leaking. Then there is the usual inspection for external cracks from freezing, typically a longitudinal crack along the bottom of the water jacket.

Otherwise just look it over, rusted out wheels, missing parts, signs of abuse. If it's been stored outside expect the transmission to be full of water, but that doesn't generally cause problems.

If it will start and go through all the gears is a huge plus. But a lot depends on what you are after, a runner or a project, and what the asking price is.
