TO-20 Hupp Transmission

My TO-20 has a single speed drop-down Hupp, cable controlled. I'm getting some leakage from the front of the transmission, and want to replace whatever seal is in there. I've not yet figured how to remove the cable from the Hupp, but my biggest concern is the can of worms once I remove the Hupp from the transmission. Is there anything I should know about this? If it is too big of hassle, I can live with the leak. Thanks as always for the help.

"Some Step-up units were sold that used a cable to shift the transmission rather than the usual lever on the left side. The cable came out of the right front of the tractor transmission case and mounted on the right lower dash with a large black plastic knob that was pushed in for overdrive or pulled out for normal position. The cables were prone to rusting and were soon discontinued in favor of the old reliable lever."

Uh...I would venture to guess your "Hupp" is a cable shifted Sherman. Cables were prone to freezing but basically split the trans, pull the bolts off the exterior casing and yard it off. Now IF it is a Hupp, you get to pull the nose piece and then pull the bolts from the inside of the Hupp behind the rear gear. If the Hupp is the low range version the rear gear has to be rotated to align notches in the rear gear to access the bolt heads. If the high range Hupp then access will not be blocked.
The Sherman wll have those bolts outside the case. Now once you open that tractor and find the transmission is painted copper or bronze it should be a creeper trans, Red is a step down and gray is the step up in Sherman's.

I've never seen a hupp with a cable only a sherman. Is it leaking from the cotter pin under the bellhousing. If so tap in a couple of times with your finger and smell it to see if it's hydraulic oil or engine oil. Either way a split will be in order. Worse comes to worse you can replace it with a standard input shaft. You can probably pop the steering box off and see if it's a sheramn or a hupp. I know RedRock makes a kit to use a lever instead of a cable should you want to go that route.

Thank you Bruce. I guess it is in fact a cable-operated Sherman. It is red, and only drops the speed of the tractor and PTO. I took the whole thing off, and found no gasket between the front and rear portions. I made a gasket, and replaced the front seal, which is the same as original TO-20 and 8N et cetera. I do appreciate the brand information. Jerry.
