hi,put starter back on tractor, put new brushes on it,did not replace bushings that came with brushes, still won't start, did try to one time(barely)-sparks at starter switch a couple times, could i have put brushes in wrong?tractor has been getting worse as time went on as far as wanting to start, broke out the 2x4 to hit starter, that use to work but not now,old bushings could not get off,not sure how to,I did use 2 starters to try to make one good one,no luck, would like to try to fix myself as I don't have money to put into tractor to have someone fix for me.what should I do now?charged battery, after sitting all winter, charger said it is charged, tried to jump start with my truck,no luck, didn't even try to start, any advice is much appreciated, thanks.

hi tom ,tried to email you but it wouldn't go through, not very good with computers, not sure it wouldn't take my email address for some reason keep in touch.thanks.

Did you try jumping the starter switch? If you take a large crescent wrench ( the Ferguson wrench works great) you can bridge the two posts and see if your switch is bad or out of adjustment. Make sure you are in neutral first.

(quoted from post at 03:11:12 03/20/15) Make sure you are in neutral first.

Good advice about the starter switch , could I add that as well as making sure the stick is in neutral, removing the lead to the coil is probably a good idea .

Did you check the soldered joint inside the housing where the stud is? A lot of times a dragging starter and even a starter that will not turn is caused by a bad connection at that joint. If the starter has ever gotten hot from excessive cranking, the solder gets hot and problems start developing.
