SAME TRACTOR AS I POsTED BELOW ABOUT TOE IN.

when driving forward after I turn the steering wheel a short distance the steering/front wheels develop have a mind of their own. the steering will start to whip and I have to hold it back from slamming against the steering stops. When straightening the front wheels I have to pull on the steering wheel to make it happen.
what gives ???

Positive caster is what uses the weight of the tractor to cause the front wheels to "want" to go straight ahead. When properly adjusted, the geometry of the steering is set so when the wheels are straight ahead, the vehicle is at it's lowest point. As the wheels are turned left or right, the vehicle is raised slightly.

Sounds like you have a case of negative castor, which will cause just the opposite to happen.

Problem is, this is not adjustable on your tractor. Something is bent or installed wrong. Has anything been apart? Any reason this has just started? Always been this way?

Just guessing, first thing comes to mind is it possible to have the radius rods upside down? Are they bent?

Jack the front wheels off the ground and shake the wheels, feel for excess play. Check the bearings, king pin bushings, tie rod ends and steering gear for excess wear. Check the tightness and straightness of all bolts. Remember, this is not a race car, it will have some play, but should not be extreme.

Turn the steering from stop to stop by the wheels, feel for anything sloppy or binding. Compare the angle of the spindles, the straightness of each axle extension, the straightness of the axle main member, compare each side, should be the same. There is a center pivot bushing, prone to wear, but usually doesn't cause problems. Just don't let it go too deep to wear through the bushing and damage the axle.

If all checks out, let the weight back down on the wheels, drive forward a few feet to settle everything in, Measure the tow in with a tape measure. It should be 0" to 1/4". This is adjustable with the drag links.

I did have the front end jacked up the other day. the bearings seemed ok, no wobble anywhere. I will jack it up again next week and go over things more closely. just looking at the rods and spindles everything looks ok but I will look closer when I have it up again. thanks.
