gas. non pwr steering

before I put the radiator back on I decided to jack up the front end. when turning the steering wheel a scratching, scraping, metal on metal noise came from the steering box. I removed the steering wheel, collar and spring. the noise lessened some but not all the way. the steering column is full of oil. the noise almost sounds like a cranky ratchet wrench. steering wheel moves freely with no binding.

any ideas out there ?

thanks.

If you can't find the source of the noise,
Might try siphoning the old oil out of the steering gearbox.

Refilling it with JD or caseIH cornhead grease, this stuff is some of the best lube material around.

This idea is just a last ditch solution, thinking out of the box, before removing it and a full tear down rebuilt.

I did notice these gearboxes, used, available at a local tractor dealer, they were north of $300.
That price caught my eye.

I check the oil level in mine each time I change batteries. So far it's always been full, but I do not think there is a drain plug, so it may be half full of water, who knows. Water on bottom, oil on top.

Ah i got and old steering sector just sold one for 250 an offered 75 dollar rebate in exchange for his non-working ps sector, hope he calls back.
