I have a major wiring problem. The wiring on my TO20 was cobbled and taped and patched. I put on a real ignition switch and did not notice one pole touching the frame. When I tried to start it, all the wires melted. Now I have no idea how they were wired. Replaced as best as I could and it will not turn over. Best way to go about this fix? Ordered a new wiring harness from yesterdday's tractor, 6 volt. Wiring is my weak point. Any help greatly appreciated.

Go to fergusontractors.org They have the wiring diagrams listed.

There are a few good sources for replacement harnesses out
there. Agri-services has the TO20 for 99 bucks. I used them
for my TO30 engine and lighting wiring, and very happy with
them.

Got a new harness coming. How do I check for further damage to voltage regulator, starter switch, starter etc. the tractor was running good now nothing after short. Thanks for the help

I would just look at everything with a volt meter. If you put a new switch on and new wiring you should have good charging when you start her up. Put the voltmeter on the battery and watch the 6 or so volts increase after you start and add some power to get the generator online.

Somewhere in the archives I remember reading how to check the generator and the voltage regulator to see which is good or bad.
