lifting problem

I was told that the reason my lift won"t stay up is because the lift cylinder is bad, it is original, what cylinder is used ? will the mounting holes need to be enlarged? Any help will be appreciated.

On the Ferguson's the lift won't stay up when you shut it down. If your it is not staying up when running, or won't lift properly you can change out the rings on the lift piston.

Investigate first. There can be many reasons for this.

First what is the issue? What is meant by it won;t stay up.
It won't stay up:
With anything on it and running.
After shut down it drifts down after a min or so.
After shut down it drifts down in 10 to 30 seconds.
After shut down it drops like a rock.

etc.
Next take the inspection plates off the sides and with it running and with an implement on the lift look inside for where the oil is leaking.

Is it:
Dripping down from the middle of the lift cover?
Front right corner of the hydro-case?
Churning just behind the pump?
Other?
Obviously keep your fingers out of the case when running.

Also, what kind of Ferguson do you have?

FYI a hydo-cylinder replacement, piston ring job, etc. is not hard. Parts are available.

The tractor is a 1957 Ferguson F40, that I"ve had since new. the issue is, the engine must at or near wide open in order to lift the mower or even lighter loads, when you return to idle the lift arms drop "like a rock".

Mine must be broken then. Mine stays where it was when I shut the tractor off unless it's been a week or so.

As Jeff-oh suggests, take the inspection cover off and look. My neighbors TO20 which he as tried to lift [b:c2f5eb965c]way[/b:c2f5eb965c] to much weight had blew the gasket between the cylinder and the cover AND the gaskets between the body and pump chambers. Replaced those and it was working until.... he was leveling some ground with a box blade at which point it started leaking oil out of the trans/pump case at a parting section. I'm sure the bolts were loose and he never tried to tighten them so all the oil has leaked out.... I've looked on this site to see if there is a gasket there but have yet to see one.

Remove the right side cover plate and while the engine is running and lift engaged look into the abyss and see if there is any turbulence in the oil or oil leaking down from the top [ keep your hands where your Mama told you to !]. Both will denote either blown gaskets or O rings in the pump or a cracked or worn cylinder . The riser pipe can also leak at the top rhs , this can be fixed with a few O rings .

I am having quite the opposite issue, mine goes up and stays up. I'm lucky if it has gone down half way in a month.

It would be helpful and beneficial to you if you state what year and model tractor you have.

At one point I had the same issue with my TO35 the linkage inside the transmission jumped. Once I get it in the correct position all was well.
