Distributor end play

I have a MF-35 that isn't running well. Not sure why.

If you take the distributor cap off and grab hold of the shaft, it slides up and down about 1/8 inch. Just wondering if that's normal or not.

Have you checked the points cap & etc if it's running bad? Did this just start? There's a bushing on shaft but shouldn't affect the up and down. I'd have to look at one of my tractors to see if they have play. Seems like mine may have some play when up pull rotor off. Hope this helps.

An 1/8" is probably a little more than usual, but
not excessive.

It's the side to side clearance that's critical.
Too much and the points can't be set and kept at
the right setting. There should be very little
side play.

Also there is a centrifugal advance. You should
be able to turn the rotor a few degrees, then
release it and it will spring back. If not, it is
stuck, the distributor will need to be
disassembled and the weights freed up.

There does not seem to be any noticeable side-to-side play.

The cap and rotor were replaced last summer. Same with the points and plugs.

I haven't checked the centrifugal advance lately. Last time I did check it seemed to work fine.
