HI, I have a 1951 To-20 that starts beautifully when it is cold or for the first time of the day but when I shut it off it just dose not want to start again. I have tried a couple of things, one of them was shutting the gas off and letting it run out thinking it was maybe flooding when it was sitting...didn't work. when you go to start it warm it just turns over fine with out even sounding like it wants to start. Then after 15-20 min I will hop on it and it starts no problem??? kind of making me crazy! I thought engines were supposed to start better warm. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Brian,

Sounds electrical related. Can you tell us more about your tractor? Is it 6 volt? 12 volt? What all have you replaced? Have you checked to see if there is spark at the plugs when it is refusing to start?

Hi Jason, Thanks for your time! I have not replaced too much with the electrical system just the voltage regulator about 3 months ago but this "not starting" thing is a pretty new problem. The tractor is a 6 Volt positive ground system. I have not seen if there is spark at the plugs when it's not starting, I did think of that but for some reason every time it dose not start I don't have a plug wrench but i will check that ASAP.

Thanks

Carry an extra spark plug in the tool box and a test light or meter in the tool box also. Next time it quits grab that extra plug and stick in one of the spark plug wires and see if there is a spark. If there is a spark then you know the problem is fuel related. If there is no spark then check to see if there is 6 volts at the coil. If there isn't then you know the switch is bad. If there is 6 volts at the coil then you know to look at the coil it's self or possibly the condenser. Either one can cause no spark when warm if they go bad.

I had a similar problem with a to-20. The condensers were shorting out when warm. It took me a long time to find this. My solution was to replace the 6-volt condenser with a 12-volt one. Never had a problem since. It always ran fine when it was cold. New 6-volt condensers always failed the same way.
