GL-1 Acting Like Fluid Coupling in Transmission?

Cold weather, and I know the lift takes a while to warm up, but this was a new one on me: started the TO-20 to blade snow.

Took it out of gear to let sit for a while, let out clutch, and tractor started to creep forward - out of gear.

A few more minutes with the clutch in, and all was fine.

Is this just because the GL-1 is so stiff?

Another reason to consider 10W-40?

That would be my first guess, especially since it quit doing it once it warmed a little.

Cold oil is some serious thick stuff! Put some in the freezer overnight, take a look at it. Now imagine that going through the hydraulic valves, or making it's way up to the rocker shaft bushings on an engine!

I changed out the trans oil in my TO35 2 years ago.
Filled sump with GL-1 90 weight mineral oil from
NAPA. Was about $16 gal.

Oil is thick in the winter months, of course the old
hydraulic pump is worn am sure, but it works ok.

I never had it creep forward that I can remember, I
do let it warm up for a short while.

The big question for me was the protection of the
bronze bearings in the transmission,

GL-1 would lube and protect them, motor oil might
have additives that would attack those bearings.

So I stuck to GL-1 mineral oil. But a slow lift is
not a real problem for me, I am in no hurry anyway
and the lift is up way before the motor is warmed
up.
