It has been a lot of years since I was around a TO-20. Owner can not get it started .Does this tractor have a solenoid or just the gearshift operated switch has ignition switch with start position and solenoid. which is right. according to serial number it is a 1949.

does it make a difference it has been changed to 12
volt. I'm going to work on tractor tomorrow. I have
not seen it yet.

Was your question about what it "should" have or what it has now? In 65 years and 12v conv. I'm sure it could be any number of assorted bird nests by now. Probably doesn't have the shifter actuated selenoid anymore. Good luck and hope it's in where it's warm. Probably be a long process.

It makes no difference whether it has been changed over to 12 volt or it is still the original 6 volt system. It is supposed to have the gear shift actuated switch. That was a safety feature so you could not crank the tractor in gear. Most of the time solenoids have been added because either the original switch went bad or the linkage has become disconnected to the switch. The original type switch is available and they do not cost very much.

The gear stick starter switch can be adjusted if it is not contacting well . Just loosen the nuts holding it down slightly and move it ; I think towards the rear, a little at a time trying it as you go . A small shift has a large effect on the action of the switch. They can also be dismantled , there is a big copper washer inside that can get corroded and pitted , simply turn this over to use the unblemished side for better contact .
