I have recently had a back op and need an extra side step for my TEA 20.
Has anyone made one or know of photos or plans of a step which I could fabricate and add to my tractor to do the job

Hi, I don't have a photo or a plan but I would consider something with a hinge maybe off the existing step so you could flip it up once you are on. or maybe a cable u shape so as not to catch things. Just my 2 cents. Ed Will

At less than $100 for the pair from this site, is it worth making steps?

Ooops, just noticed you are in Victoria.

$117 per pair on EBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Foot-Rest-Step-RH-LH-Massey-Ferguson-Tractor-TE20-TEA20-TED20-TEF20-/321314724226

That is Heads in Queensland. Wagga Tractors and M.D. Machinery in Victoria usually stock them. I founds M.D. to be excellent with sharp prices.

You could also find a pair at a tractor wreckers for around $60.

My Champion grader had a step on 2 cables, the new Volvo uses rubber. Perhaps a piece of angle, and 2 chains, although rubber, would be a lot more stiff.

It's tough having a crook back , one thing I can say is that it won't just be getting on the tractor that will be difficult , sitting on that original seat won't be a picnic either . Spinal fusion 14 years ago taught me that .
A second side step exactly like you have can be suspended under the existing one , hang this from 150mm long pieces of 30mm x 3mm flat strap with loose holes and bolts fastened with nylocks . The idea is to have a slightly protruding step that hangs loosely under the existing but can lift out of the way when not in use . A simple spring should lift it out of the way . When hanging it if the straps are placed correctly you should be able to allow 100mm of the front edge of the second step to sit forward of the upper step , this will allow you to push against the spring at the rear with your foot and let you use the first then the second step .
When the second step is in the lowest position the straps need to have a bent tab or two at their top end to lock against the top step so it doesn't sway .
Of course when you have mounted the tractor the step should rise up and give reasonable clearance .

Yes a second step is what I had in mind.
Bob (Aust), the picture is my tractor so have the foot plates.
Tried getting on/off with the aid of a upside down bin, cutting the height in half does help.
Follow what you are fella's are talking about had hoped someone had done the hard work and made a step.

Trouble is... that box on a string is OK, but not handy. An illegal following you around with a box is not very efficient either.
Stirrups and chain hoops sound good, until they get hooked on something- anything lower than the front or rear axles is just trolling for an obstacle .
But a stirrup made of 1/4 inch or even thinner strap 'might' just do you- but... if your back is in such a state you can't get on? then getting on might cause a relapse or worse. Jostling around in the seat might bring a traumatic thing within minutes of climbing aboard. You may want to stay off it for a while longer...
btw, like a horse, these tractors were designed to mount from the left side, you'll see fewer obsticles to hang up on, so if you do a strap stirrup, put it there.

I think you need something like an electric garage door opener. Replace your step with tracks and rollers mounted to the transmission bolts. I know that small electric winches are available in 12 volts, not sure about 6 volts, but maybe a starter motor can be fitted. Mount the drive on rear axle, and use a shaft running forwards alongside the transmission and use it to wind up two chains or cables. Make plastic shields so that your pants leg doesn't get caught. Test it with sandbags to make sure it can hold your weight (at 3 times safety factor)
This is Mod 1. After trials, further modifications may be demanded.
