Getting ready to install all new electrical items on the TE 20 rebuild. Upgrading ignition to electronic. I have a new 12 volt alternator (came with external resistor), 12 volt coil (for external resistor). I also have 4 new Champion spark plugs (Napa # 502) After some research, I see that plug is listed as a non resistor plug. That was my first red flag...

I am getting ready to set the timing on this machine and before I try to start it up for the first time, I want to be 100% sure that I wont fry something. Any suggestions or experiences that can help me out with this? I have all manuals and think I am on the right track here but want to make sure. Thanks for the help!

Generally firing up an engine first time is break
in the cam. This generally brings 800-1500 RPM
varying it up and down for about 20 minutes.
Timing set is put the engine at the correct timing
mark, open the dist, make sure it is pointed at #1
and turn the dist so the points are just starting
to open. Points open and the coil fires.
Cranking to build oil pressure wipes the prelube
off the bearings. Put the gas and juice to it and
fire it up. Don't let it idle, run it up to speed
and get the cam broke in.
80 hours later and the oil pressure is still
running 35 PSI hot or cold at idle or 15 MPH road
speed.
 
Don't worry about '' non resistor '' plugs , that has nothing to do with the alternator or coil . Resistor plugs are actually radio interference suppressor plugs, non resistor plugs are what you want to use .
 
Sounds like you're on the right track. Just follow the instructions that came with the electronic ignition and the alternator. Remember this is now negative ground. The initial connection of the battery is the moment of truth! Just touch the last cable, leave it loose to be ready to disconnect if something goes wrong.

Bruce is right on the start up, get everything ready, fire it up and bring the RPM up. Best to do the first start in a warm shop or get some heat on the engine. I like to have the valve cover just sitting on so I can peek in and see the rockers oiling. You'll need to reset the lifters after its initial run anyway.
