Ring Gear TO20 Question

Hello All,
I tried to replace my ring gear with no success. Could not get it to expand enough and wasn't sure about which direction to place it on. My question is from which direction do you mount the ring gear front side (motor side) or back side (bell housing side)? The manual is not real clear about this. The manual says that below serial no. 10000 that it mounts from the rear. My tractor is serial no. 14000 something. Any replies appreciated.

The wife gave up oven for use, plywood on the
kitchen floor and two hammers. It barely went on
after 30 minutes. Rosebud tip on a acy torch is the
most popular method. I just did not have a torch
then.

go on from back to front. Put flywheel in freezer and ring gear in oven or torch it hot. Should get you enough clearance. Little file work around starting edge of ring gear unless you got one that has a chamfer machined already. If old one isn't that bad just turn it around and install it and spot weld in 4 equal spaced spots. They usually wear out because starter drive is junk or ring gear gets knocked back out of range of starter gear full engagement.Already have new one then go with it.

If one side of the teeth is beveled, that side
goes to the front. If the edges of the teeth are
square on both sides, it doesn't matter, it will
go either way.

A rosebud torch or a cutting torch turned up to
make a big flame works best. Put the flywheel on
a solid bench, preferably steel, or on a concrete
floor, but beware of popping cement! Get the ring
hot enough it will go right on. Helps to have 2
people, one to run the torch, the other to
position the ring and tap it on. Welding gloves
are a big plus!

Tack welding on the back side is a good idea.
