starting problem TO-35

the tractor will NOT start unless I jump directly to battery. does that rule out a safety switch malfunction ?

what else could be the culprit?

thanks.

Is it 12 volts? Are you jumping from a good 12 v. battery to the tractor battery? If yes and yes, then the hi-low safety switch is still in the circuit, and it sounds like you just have a bad battery or bad battery connection. Otherwise, I'm confused what you are asking.

I was jumping from a 12v rechargeable battery pack directly to the starter. it may be the ignition switch as the last time I started it I "jiggled" the switch a bit and it started from the in place tractor battery.

go through the switches and find the bad one. I know I sometimes have to jiggle my hi-lo lever to get the switch to touch just right. Not bad enough I feel like going into fix it, and I figure it's a anti-theft device :)

If the tractor is 12 volts, why are you jumping directly to the starter? That's normally what you do when the tractor is 6 volts and you are jumping from a 12 volt battery (pack). Still not thinking we have the whole picture. Did you try to jump directly to the battery and it didn't work, so you jumped to the starter and it started? Is that the question you are asking??

the tractor did not start using the battery and key. so to get it running I used a battery pack and jumped it to the starter. it's running now so it has become a mute point I guess.

OK, great. But it is very difficult to help sometimes when there are conflicts. In your original post you said you jumped direct to the battery, but then you said you actually jumped to the starter. If the tractor now starts easily without jumping it, then it is indeed moot. But if it doesn't, tell us exactly the situation and maybe we can help. Have a good holiday.

should have said jumped to starter both times. yet another senior moment.

also said mute when I meant moot. (yasm)

merry Christmas and happy new year.

If it only starts by jumping to the starter, then indeed you are bypassing the Solenoid and the safety switch in the Hi-Low. Either of those could be the problem. Jump directly to battery (if it's a 12 volt system, you never said) and if it still doesn't start it's probably the battery. HTH.
