Water Leaking from Hole Behind the Carburator

Hello,

This past weekend, I started up my 1957 TO-35 to move some brush. It has the gas engine. After running for a few minutes, I noticed water pouring out under the tractor. It was coming out of about a 1 inch diameter hole located in the side of the engine right behind the carburator.

The radiator, hoses, and water pump were replaced last Spring and the tractor has run fine since then. We have had some freezing temps lately, but the tractor had anti-freeze. After shutting the tractor down and letting it cool off, I tried to refill the radiator, but the water poured out of the hole in the engine about as fast as I could pour it in. I checked the engine oil for signs of water and found none.

Is there a seal located within the engine that may have ruptured that would allow the water to just pour from the engine like that.

Looks like you may have popped-out a "Freeze-out"
plug from the block. These are pressed into the
block to prevent the block from freezing/cracking.
You should be able to buy a replacement and press it
back in. Clean area before installing. Good luck!

If it's the freeze plug when replacing use Permatex #2 around edge of plug before you drive it into block. Just drive plug in until edges are even with block. I always use a socket that fits inside plug to drive it in. If old plug goes inside block when taking it out it does not hurt to leave it inside. You can buy plugs at any auto parts for around $1.

Internal combustion engines that have operated for several years with "WATER COOLING ONLY" may have contributed to your problem......MAY HAVE.
Core plugs are used to fill the sand casting core holes found on water-cooled internal combustion engines. They are also variously called frost plugs, freeze plugs, engine block expansion plugs, or Welch plugs. These PLUGS RUST through. If indeed this is your case, you may decide to consider replacing all PLUGS that have come in contact with the coolant.....WATER. My last experience with this problem was a MF 135 with a 3 cylinder Perkins. The tractor had ran with WATER only for coolant for over 1000 hrs. The CORE PLUG Behind the CVA FUEL PUMP RUSTED through. Then again your mentioned problem may be something totally different.

I had to replace the core plug in this Z134 because it rusted through. On other Z134s I have this hole isn't even drilled out. I've always wondered why some Z134s have the plug and some don't. With a wet sleeve block design I wouldn't think core plugs are even needed.
