Ferguson Tractor

I am looking at a tractor and all the owner knows is he took it in on a trade and it has the ferguson emblems on side of hood and the horz. bar grill. Other that that it looks a lot like a Ford 9 or 8N. I have bought and sold a lot of those over the years but never had a ferguson. I am hoping you guys can tell me the pros and cons of the ferguson tractor vs. the little Fords. Also any potential problem or areas of concern to look at and for. One last question, how do I tell what model number it is? Thank you all so much in advance and looking forward to learning about a different brand of tractors.

The TO 20 and TO 30 has the serial number plate on "TOP" of the dash between steering column and hood. TO 20 serial numbers are 1 through 60000. TO 30 serial number is 60001 through 140000. These were made in Detroit, Mi. if your tractor has two bolts and nuts holding shifter on then it is a TE series meaning it was made in Coventry, England. Look below the engine oil dip stick in cast letters and numbers Z 120 is a TO 20 engine, Z 129 is a TO 30 engine. Don't be afraid of these parts are fairly readily available.

IMHO they are better than an N series Ford. OHV engine is a little more modern than the flat head.

They are better than the Ford N series on most aspects. Of course the 8N has position control on the lift which the Ferguson doesn't. That is the only advantage the Ford has over the Ferguson. If what you have is a TO-30 or a TEA-20 with the 85mm engine then you have a tractor that is a lot more powerful than the Ford N series and because of it being overhead valve it will use less fuel while producing more power. Ferguson has better brakes and a lot better axle design. No rivets to work loose like the 9N or a big nut that will back off and ruin the axle splines and hub like the 8N did. The Ferguson has a solid one piece axle. The biggest thing I prefer on a Ferguson over a Ford is the whole hood tilts up. Resale value wise? Around here an 8N will usually bring a little more than a Ferguson and a 9N brings less. A lot less actually. I could have bought a running 1939 or 1940 model 9N on steel wheels last year for $800.00. A good Ferguson around here goes for $1500.00 to $2300.00 depending on the shape it's in. An 8N goes for $1800.00 to $2800.00. I promise you that if you like the N series Ford and you get a good Ferguson you will love it.

With the n series if you are bushhogging and run over a stump you'll have to disengage the pto and then you have no lift. Find you a to35 or mf35 with 2 stage clutch, then you can raise the blade and continue cutting.
