Trans/ Hydralic Fluid

I have a 1959 TO35 and I have water in my fluid and am wanting to change it out. I have been reading about using 10W30 motor oil. I found a great deal on some Rotella 15W40 heavy duty diesel engine oil. This is a low ash oil. Is this an OK engine oil to do a switch from the mineral oil?
$50.00 for a 5 gal pail.

Debuggers,

I think you are making a good move.

I just changed out the trans hydraulic fluid in my 1957 TO35 this last summer. I bought the mineral oil 90 weight GL-1 from NAPA.

But in the winter months the oil is thick and it takes a short while for it to start lifting.

If I had to do it over, I would use shell rotella 15w40. I am just partial to that oil as I use it in my dodge diesel truck and the motor of my tractor, it still has zinc for longer wear.

The GL-1 works fine, but in cold weather it slows you down, it is a non detergent oil.

I never found a non detergent multi grade oil that I could buy in bulk. Lowe's sells it by the qt for there lawnmowers, but it's expensive.

The 15w40 will work fine.

BTW, how do the shifter boots and the rear link boot under the seat look? That's typically how water gets in, bad boots.

Steve, my shifter boots are OK. I changed a couple of them out 3 or 4 years ago. I have not checked the boot on the upper arm though. I think the moisture is condensation from a lot of sitting in the barn. It's been 7 or 8 years since it's been changed out.

I made mention of diesel grade 15/40 once upon a time. (you need 6 gallons) John(UK) went off on me.
Diesel grade oil keeps the grit in suspension and will not allow it to settle to the bottom of the sump. This means your running yuck through the hydraulics....
oops.
So...next year I should drain off the diesel or did I do it already? getting old is fun. I am starting to watch all the old movies again and not remembering too much of them as i go along.
Gotta go. Time to shoot a skirrel at the bird feeder. blind is another fun factor too. This is the 5 th time...Hee hee.
