A friend has a to 30, it has an oil leak on the rear of the engine. He says it's coming from the head gasket between the block and head. It doesn't leak water and not getting any coolant in the oil. Is this possible? I never heard of a head gasket leaking oil. He said it started missing and running rough before he noticed the oil leak. Thanks for any info.

is he sure the oil is not coming from the valve cover seal, however I do believe there is a oil port from the block to the head which then goes to the valve body and rockers I guess it could be leaking there and I believe that would require taking the head off to fix it

Yes, there is an oil port that passes through the head gasket, it brings oil to the rocker shaft.

Wondering if something else happened, like overheating the engine before the leak and miss started. It's possible for the gasket to leak oil and compression (the missing and running rough issue) and not leak coolant into the oil or a cylinder.

Whatever happened, it really should be repaired before it gets worse. Reminder, the engine has wet sleeves. They are held down by the head. Once the head is off, if the engine is turned through, they may push up out of the block, breaking the oring seal where they seat in the bottom of the block. That means pulling the pistons and sleeves, cleaning the seats and oring grooves, lots of unexpected work!

Thanks Steve, I will pass on the info. He said the tractor did not overheat,he has owned it 3 years. He is trying to sell it to me for $1250 as is. It doesn't look like it would be too much of a job to pull the head, have it checked and replace the head gasket.
