Brought home the TEF20 tonight. Also got a plow, belt pulley, a carry all? And I'm headed back Tuesday to pick up 2 ferguson 3pt hitch side delivery rakes. I bought this tractor knowing it needs transmission work, it gets stuck in gear and even when your in neutral and the clutch is released you start moving forward.

Looks the part , well done on that deal .
The correct name for the carry all is a ' Link box ' , or ' Transport box '.
This link [ no pun intended! ] will take you to some pictures of a well restored example .

The 'stuck in gear' problem is common

It is easy to use a strong screw driver or small pry bar to move it our of gear through the oil filling plug in the top of the transmission

I carry one in the tractor toolbox even though the tractor only occasionally sticks in gear

Nice looking TEF-20. Where did you pick it up at?
I would consider moving the battery. I bought one with the battery in the same location that yours is and the hydraulic control spring was very pitted from battery acid.

Thanks! Had a wanted ad on Kijiji all summer, looking for Ferguson attachments and TEF20 tractors. This was the first response I got. Was about 25 miles away from home, so almost perfect!
I was considering moving the battery, however I have no idea where to move it.

excellent to know, I'll have to try that tomorrow, couldn't find the energy to go dig through the snow we received today to get to the shop.

Thanks for the link! took some measurements off the box, will be building a rear gate for it this winter.

(quoted from post at 23:03:12 11/07/14) Sweet deal with all the equipment.

Yeah fantastic deal, sure do like the Ferguson system. One item I would like to find is the Ferguson Snow Blade. Only ever seen one picture of one, never seen one in person or for sale.

The left rear axle on these- diesels- was different than the rest of the TE,TO, early MF models, because the engine needed 2 batteries, and where Tom lives, 2 800 amp deep cycles will help the radiator hose heater element in the heated garage under the horse blanket...
as I was telling an Alberta Canuck in Grand Praire the other day... it must be the US really did win the war of 1812, cause we got warmer places to escape too....

This tractor was imported from the uk, about 20 years ago. The battery was already like that when i got it. Not going to go back to 2 batteries, as i won't be using her in winter. Today it is -11C, with some of that white stuff on the ground

Right, New old problem. Opened the oil fill on the transmission, got it out of reverse into 1st, took it out of 1st into neutral and watched it put itself into reverse again. From any gear into neutral it slips into reverse. I've never really done much transmission work just clutch stuff, so any and all help is appreciated

Gear selectors may be worn , this happens a lot with tractors that continually shifted forwards and backwards in confined areas.
Try pushing down hard when shifting , this might help until you determine the problem . In any case never pull up on the stick when changing gear .

These selectors are very worn , they will need nothing short of replacement or a machine shop rebuild .

The view through the gear stick hole shows what they should look like , the other shows the stick end , the ball of which can also wear down and cause these problems . Start by pulling out the stick first , if you are fortunate then a little welding on the ball ens is all you will need.

Thanks for the pictures. Tractor wouldn't start today, just too cold out. Supposed to be warmer by Friday, pull it into the shop then and I'll pull the shifter out. This morning when i was looking in it getting it out of gear, nothing looked worn like your pictures show. I think i need to split the tractor anyways to replace the throwout bearing.

As I look at the picture closer... the second battery is 'on top?' of the top link? Usually there are 4 bosses cast into the left axle housing. I wonder why yours doesn't have it. You do have a battery under the hood right?
Minus 11 and snow? Yep. Canada did lose the war of 1812....

Check K gass tank for corrosion before filling it , most are pin holed with rust . Same system used on Spitfire fighters , put diesel in pump to develop pressure element warms diesel . On start warm atomised diesel is forced into the chamber making starting easier.

If I remember correctly the TEF has a battery on each axle. There is no room under the hood as the kigas tank and the axillary fuel tank is where the battery is normally. The quadrant control lever is moved forward to allow the battery on the right axle.

The original TEF20 had two 6 volt batteries, one on each rear axle on trays like this:

http://www.fergiland.co.uk/our-range/t20-tef-battery-tray-4070.html

Most have since been converted to a single 12V battery. Mine is on the left hand axle.
