sealing the gas tank - what and how?

I regularly rinse the rust flakes out of my gas tank ('53 TO30) and clean out the shut-off valve but I fear there isn't a lot of "tank" left so it is time to fix it right. Any suggestions for etching and coating materials? Any stories of attempts that failed (and why)?

Thanks!
Don

Eastwood Supply Company has your kit. Too lazy?
Suspend magnet from brass chain. Attach to gas tank
lid. Suspend in gas tank.
Haven't done that one yet. Still thinking about it.

When I got my 202 the previous owner had attempted to re coat it with POR15. I think the mistake he made was that all the remaining rust had not been removed. It looked good for a while but it didn't take long for the POR15 with rust attached to start flaking off and plugging up the fuel filter. After fighting with it for a few months, replacing the inline filter and eventually putting an original type sediment bowl back on, removing the carb several times to clean it and generally fiddling around with it, I decided to try and clean out the tank myself.
I emptied it, took it off and threw a piece of chain and I believe a handful of screws and assorted other pieces in there. I shook the heck out of it to try and loosen as much of the old coating and rust off as I could. I believe I just rinsed with water. The biggest challenge is trying to get all the flakes out. And I believe the reason why it didn't work was because it would be all but impossible to get all the rust out before coating it. It was better when I was done but I do still have to empty the occasional group of flakes out of the sediment bowl. Haven't had to touch the carb in a couple years.

He said for what he paid for the POR15 and to get it to Canada, he almost could have bought a replacement tank. If it were me, I'd keep using it until you get a leak then replace it.

I have had good results taking mine to a radiator shop that has
an acid tank for boiling out radiators. Then use the pour in
liner. The secret is getting it clean.
