TO-30 dies after short run time

I have a TO-30 that starts right up when cold, but recently it has been dying after running for only a minute or so. It used to do this occasionally and then it would restart and run fine if I walked away for an hour. But now if I walk away for an hour or so, it restarts, but again dies after a minute or so. It seems to be starved for gas. I rebuilt the carburetor a couple of years ago, but did I do something wrong? I know gas is getting to the carburetor because I disconnected the gas line at the inlet to the carburetor, and it flows freely. Any suggestions?

Could be the coil, if it's get hot, a broken wire will open and shut down the electrical system

Just be sure when it dies that the plugs are still getting fire, if not I would replace the coil.

Could your fuel tank cap vent hole have gotten stopped up and causing a negative vacuum on your tank.
This would shut off the fuel flow to the carb until the tank cap is removed from the tank.

Let us know what you find wrong!!!!

If it runs for a min then shuts down it acts like it is running on the gas in the carb and the carb is not refilling.

After it runs an it dies out have you opend the carb drain? Is fuel at that point a heavy stream?

Then tap the carb with a hammer. If it is a stuck needle valve this should vibrate it loose. If the fuel then starts to flow out the drain it is probally the needle valve/ seal or float

I'd also check the elbow fuel filter in the carb inlet. I have had mine clogged and caused a similar issue.

If the problem is dirty fuel stopping up the carb.

I had to install an inline metal fuel filter between the cutoff valve and carb, this filter stopped the dirty fuel problems for me.

these are all good things to try and will start you in the right direction and you may find that one of the suggestion will fix your problem. it may also be a vacuum link from your carb to the intake or from intake to head? did this all happen before or after the rebuild?

Thanks for all of the suggestions! It will be a couple of days before I have time to try them out because I have a day job, but I will let you know what works! Thanks again!

Hello again. Well, tonight I went out to start the Ferguson, and of course it started and ran fine! I let it run for 10 minutes and it ran great. This makes me think my problem is an intermittent sticking needle valve. This is a tractor that does not get a lot of use. I mostly use it in the winter for snow removal on my long driveway. Sometimes it get used to condition hay in the summer. But it can easily sit for several weeks or longer between uses. Would this period of sitting cause the needle to sometimes get stuck in the seat? Do you think a fuel additive would help prevent the sticking? Thanks for any ideas!

A bad condenser is also known to cause the kind of problem you have. When the condenser gets a little warm it fails, and you have to wait until the condenser is cold again.
