Set my tractor on fire.

I was mowing last night and I have alot of leaves. Got off to take care of an issue for my daughter. When I turned around the leaves had caught fire from the exhaust and flames were licking up and dancing pretty good around the tractor.

Anyway, got the tractor out of the flames no worse for wear.

Of course, I have seen and read the warnings of the low hung exhaust dangers, but I had not expierenced it.

I will also say that I am very proud of my 9-year old. She kept a clear head and before I could turn around here she came with a bucket of water. Her only comment was, "Sometimes you scare me daddy." I also got a stern lecture about not setting the woods on fire.

Okay, you may now poke fun at me. :)

One year I was using my semi-mounted john deere corn picker mounted on my TO-35 Ferguson.

I stopped to clear a stoppage, when I got back to the tractor the corn stalks was on fire under the tractor. Tractor had a under belly muffler and tale pipe.

I quickly moved the tractor, picker and wagon out of the way then was able to put the fire out.

As soon as I got the fire out and equipment back to the house, I went to the local tractor parts supply store and bought a up-right muffler for the tractor.

I understand Ferguson made a grass guard for the underbelly muffler, but I have never seen one. It must not have worked so well.

I later re-installed the underbelly muffler because I did not like the noise of the up right muffler in my face. I am just very careful never to stop the tractor in high combustible grass.

Sounds like you need to get a high arch 40! Or a diesel, as the exhaust temp is cooler at idle and light loads than gas engines. Better stay uot of the woods until it snows!

Remember the early days of the catalytic converters? Lots of car fires, especially by the police. We lived near Waco TX at the time and they burned up several cars pulling off into deep grass in the summer. Live and learn.

Lucky you eh? Well, if you switch to a vertical exhaust, you'll need tropical clothes and ear plugs all day too, and have to mind low branches that never bothered you before- but anything is better than being responsible for a fire, even on your own property... it is frowned upon by the establishment....
