Voltage regulator

A couple of weeks ago I'd posted a question about the charging system and thanks to the wealth of knowledge out there I fixed the problem - for an hour or so. I polarized the system like Steve suggested and things worked fine for a day then the fluctuation started. I've tried everything, grounding - opening up the cover and chasing out the spiders and other living critters and still the fluctuation. Anyhoo- I took the regulator to an electric shop here that I trust "I think" and was told that there are several different regulators for the tractor and he wants the generator so he can match up the regulator with the generator and when the new one comes in tune it to match the generator for optimum operation. My question is, is the high priced regulator tuned to my generator a good thing or am I being feed a bunch of fertilizer? I can buy one from here for about $30.00...

Know that when I had the Lucas generators rebuilt for my TE 20 we
went thru 3-4 regulators at the shop bench testing to get one that
worked right.
Might be worth the trouble depending what you have.

I've never had to match a regulator to the generator. There were only two regulators used on the TO-20's and TO-30's. Either a 1118308 or a 1118291 so for the shop to say there were several different ones is wrong. Now as far as using the $30.00 regulator, I don't use them or recommend them. A good one with lifetime replacement is around $60.00. Look at the difference on the inside. The good one is on the left and the $30.00 is on the right

Don't know about the TO 20 but when I changed my gen. to 12 volt (TO 30) my guy asked which regulator I had and he showed me two pictures. I pointed to the one that looked like mine and he got me one and said to polarize it when I got them both installed.

Yours was probably one of the hunk of junks that are common. I had the same thing happen. Charged beautiful. For less than a week. Put the old one back on (that looked like it had seen a whole lot of better days) and it worked fine, and still is.

I'm with Jason.. there are probably good ones out there. Now if he would just tell us where to get them.

Thanks for the pictures and the insight all. I've had this guy do electrical for me for many years with no problem so I'll trust him again and bring in the generator. I'll let you know what comes of this. And Z-man it's a 6 volt system, I'm keeping it as original as when dad first brought it home, except for those darn tires.

Thanks Jason.. I'll probably be needing one eventually, as the one that's on there is old, and while it works, didn't look healthy when I put it back on.

I got mine from Oreillys. If you or anyone else gets one from Napa just beware that they do sell a cheaper version. I think it is a VR851SB. The good one there is a VR851.
