Z134 Continental Engine

Hello everyone, I have a 1955 TO-35 Ferguson Tractor. My problem is the engine. I drove it and it ran great, no smoke, no noise, but it used 2 quarts of oil every hour. It had a real bad rear main seal leak, so I split the tractor and checked it out. Seal was rock hard rubber, checked the mains and the rear main bearing looks bad. Crank will need ground. Checked the rods and number 1 and 4 are real bad, rod itself must be re-sized. Block is great no cracks, head is fine. Rebuild costs will run me well over a $1,000.00. So I am looking for a good used motor to replace mine.
This is my problem, I cannot find any anywhere. Is there a secret place that is known only to a special few? Or maybe there are none out there to be bought.
What about putting another engine in the tractor?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I guess it may depend on your location but the Z134 was used in many different tractors. The 202, 204, 35, 50 just to name a few. There are tractor salvage yards all over, start by looking for one online. You will also find parts on ebay.

Not likely you'll find anything that old that will be trustworthy. Add the freight charges and there will be little savings left.

Best do the work your self, (get a shop manual if you don't have one). You can find everything you need for a rebuild. Plenty of aftermarket parts, but beware, a reputable source is important, (like this site). There is a lot of import junk out there! Ebay is a good source for used parts.

You will need some machine work done, crank grinding and head work... If you don't have a trusted shop, check their reputation first! Lots of hacks out there, take your money, ruin your parts!

These are simple engines, designed to be field serviced. At least you'll know what you've got if you do it yourself.

Repair your engine correctly and it will last a long time. Unless you find a good used one that has just been rebuilt recently used will be a shot in the dark how good it actually is. I would repair what you have, and KNOW what you have.

Thanks for all the input, I am a retired automotive
machinist and I have over 40 years of repairing and
rebuilding engines and equipment. Complete rebuild
parts and machine shop costs will cost me over
$1300.00.
I will recheck the parts costs.

Definitely check this site for parts. You can get a new crank for just over 300.. or complete overhaul kits w/ new crank for 700ish.

With your experience I'm surprised you would even consider sinking half as much into the unknown. The pride of doing the assembly yourself when hearing it crank the first time is worth the other half.

X and 2 are steering you in the right direction here. If you retired from engine machining you should still have connections to discount houses and machines after quiting time from your ol home boys.
The set x mentioned is mega rebuild, but if your crank journals aren't under specs, you turn that down in your own shop. Bearing sets on YT here are reasonable. The 700 kit and you'd have to bring the block in for a linebore, that ain't fun either right? I've done 4 or 5 rebuilds, from the YT store here, a couple would have looked not worth the effort, but they run again now.
Paying several hundred for an engine laying on its side in the mud in a junk yard, compare to the same money in plastic bags and a nice big box, the difference is turning the crank and...time. as a former machinist? Hey if I can re-assemble one in 2 days, it should take you a mater of hours? It will take you longer than that to degrease the clutch assembly, and might as well order the 2 plates from YT with the engine kit, no sense doing a split twice in a lifetime...

Well I cleaned up the block today and found 3
cracked webs, one between #1 and #2 cyl's and #2
and #3 cyl's and #3 and #4 cyl's. These were in
the lower part of the block not where the head
bolts on. So rebuilding is not an option.
This web area seems to be a poor feature and I
don't know if I could find a block that was not
cracked.

I have been told that some forklifts use the same
engine?? Anyone research this before??
I know forklifts used the Continental Engines, I am not sure about the OHV Z134.

I found a rebuilt engine through one of the members on this forum. Completely redone and checked for cracks. I will let all know how it looks and runs when it is delivered.
