once the pump has been removed....

is there any way to test the safety valve? (pictured)

also would a bad safety valve have anything to do with failure of the oscillator assembly? most if not all those parts were lying underneath the hyd. pump.
old style pump and safety valve (2000psi)

thanks !

would any good diesel shop have a tester? also what happens if/when it is being tested and it fails?
thanks.

No more than they cost new, replace it. It's not worth taking a chance on an old valve. The damage it will do it if sticks is far more expensive than replacing it.

that is the later 2500psi valve I believe.

original part number for my TO-35 was 180962M91

after looking other places I gave AGCO a shot at it and they said "obsolete".

thanks for trying

Steve, the TO30 safety valve is supposed to be a 2000-2300 psi valve so maybe that is closer to what you want than the later 2500 psi choice.

the early pump in my tractor calls for the 2000psi valve. the to-30 valve is not compatible.

Well it's my opinion but it's your tractor so do whatever you want but if it was me I would rather take a chance with a new 2500 psi relief valve than a 60 year old supposed to be 2000 but could at anytime be a no psi pressure relief valve that causes a sudden and loud bang because the pressure exceed 2500 psi. When you buy the newer style pump to replace the older style pump, what relief valve do you think is in it? The long obsoleted 2000psi valve? Nope....like I said its your tractor so do as you wish.

I talked with irv at nolts equipment yesterday and he said the 2500 valve would work. I wanted the OEM 2000 psi valve because I had read several places where it was said not to use a 2500 psi valve in the older style pump as it may cause "damage". what damage was never explained. I think I found a shop where I can have the old valve tested. if it proves to be okay then I need to find out if all the parts for the "oscillator" are still available. then I need to figger out a way to get the parts into the oscillator housing.

My point to that was even if you have your original one tested and it tests good that after 60 years you really don't have a way of knowing if it will be good the next time it is tested in your tractor. That valve has been subjected to 60 years worth of dirt and corrosion. The damage is cause when the lift is either overloaded or the linkage is out of adjustment and the old relief valve doesn't blow off when it was supposed to. Which results in best case scenario...it will bust the lift cylinder, worse case it will bust the top cover along with the lift cylinder. You have to remember that it was recommended to blow the relief valve off in those tractors quite frequently to make sure that it stayed clean and functional. The problem was most people didn't do that and now 60 years later when someone needs it to blow off it can't and the result is broken parts. But be honest how often are you going to be overloading the lift? Chances are that you aren't going to ever be overloading it. There are 35's with the later thicker top cover, and later pump with the 3000 psi valve and the covers got busted on those also, not because of the 3000psi valve but because of a 3000psi valve that didn't work because it was the original and didn't work when it was needed.

Although it is not recommended in the manuals and most don't do it you can modify relief valves to blow off at a lower pressure. They even sell plunger and spring kits to rebuild relief valves now.
