Looks like you found the cause of your unresponsive control valve! There should also be a little squarish piece of metal and a circlip laying in the bottom as well. I was able to reinstall all the pieces in my pump when this happened and it has held for a few years so far. You might want to get a new circip though even if you find the old one so it has a better grip than the old fatigued clip.
