newbie question

Hi,

I acquired 5 acres of land. I am looking at purchasing a 1950 TE20 with a rear mount finishing mower. This tractor DOES NOT have turf tires on it.

Do the ag tires chew up the lawn? Has any one used a TE20 with a finishing mower for their lawn?

It also comes with a plow. Will I be able to plow snow from my driveway? There are chains on the tires.

Thanks for all the help.

Yes, ag tires will tear up the yard. Or at best, leave marks.

You don't plow snow with a plow - You do it with a rear mounted blade.

If you don't know one from the other, post pics of what you got and we'll set ya straight.

Turf tires are good not to chew up the lawn. In
the heat of summer when the ground is hard as
nails, the chances of leaving divots are slim.
Springtime when the ground is soft or fall when
the rains have returned the ground is soft enough
to leave lug marks. Worn out ag tires leave less
of a mark and you might be able to get by with
worn tires if your not working with a golf course.
My lawn is as large as the trees knocked down.
Currently about 90 minutes worth if doing all the
areas. I run a brush hog on new ag tires and
usually do not leave lug marks because I don't
push it on a damp lawn. I just had someone buy a
set of pretty worn out ag tires from me perhaps
for the same purpose. Never did find out.
Most people are using a back blade to plow snow.
You can try your plow blade and see what you get.
A trick for that is to get a piece of pipe, slice
it down the length and slip it over the blade
edge. This will help it slide over the pavement.

I mow my lawn, our church lawn, and all the vacant lots in a subdivision with a 70hp tractor and 11'5" finish mower. The tires are 16.9 x 30 Good year long bar short bars that wear terrible but were new when I started. No one has complained about marks in 9 years.

Maybe you've been forgiven and his wife might not be as forgivin'...

Thanks for the responses. Going to look at it tonight. 3500 for a 1950 with finishing mower, back blade, front blade, and york rake. states engine and tranny rebuilt.

Have to look closely at it for leaks and such.

Thanks again for your responses. If I buy it I am sure I will be back with other questions.

Ag tires won't leave a scratch here in the red clay
of Ga.but I still wanted turf tires on my grass
cutter fe35.

He was saying he had a front blade which many people that clear snow in the winter call them plows or snow plows.
