TO 30 3 point hitch question

My 3 point hitch doesn't seem to lower and raise properly. When I lower the lever about 2 1/2" the arms will lower until I pull it back up about a half inch or until the implement hits the ground. When I pull it back up a half inch, it will stop. Up another half inch, it will raise again. It acts like it has 3 positions, up, stop, and down. Shouldn't it go down gradually depending on the position of the lever? Are there any adjustments I can make to fix it? Thanks!

What you have described is normal for a TO30. There are three positions, down, neutral (actually slowly drifting down depending on the condition of your hydraulic system), and up. A TO30 has draft control, not position control. You can select how hard a plow pulls and the tractor will adjust the depth to make the pull, or draft, constant. In even soil this results in consistent depth, but if you hit a tight spot instead of spinning out the plow is raised slightly. This gives additional traction and enables the tractor to move forward. When the soil loosens the plow returns to it's original position.

The draft control works great for ground engaging implements. It's not as ideal for above ground implements. That said, there are easy ways to set up your tractor to use just about any 3 point implement. Let us know what you want to do, and I'm sure you'll get lots of specific help.

what oil do you have in the sump???

when was the last time the hyd/transmission oil was changed?

my old fergy TO-35 takes 90 weight mineral oil, can purchase it at NAPA, this oil Supposedly protects the yellow metal in the transmission, nothing to do with the lift pump.

some say 10w30 regular motor oil will work, but I was concerned about using some type oil not called for in the owners manual.

Thanks. I did not know it was supposed to be this way.

I'm not sure what oil is in it. I purchased the tractor a few months ago from my girlfriends grandfather and have not changed it sense. I planed to change it out with 5 or 10w30.
