My starter is going, should I have it rebuilt or get
a new one?also I believe it is a 6 volt starter,but
I have 12 volt system,do I get 6 volt starter or 12
volt ? thanks.

I have been running a six volt starter on 12v TO-35 for about six months. so far no problems. there is a one man shop nearby. he rebuilds starters and generators for about 80-85 dollars. I have been going to him since 1975. hope he never retires.

Pick up a rebuild kit with brushes and bearings and you should be okay. I don't see the kit s here but check other online sources or fleabay. You may also have an automotive electric repair guy near you. Kits are about $20 online.

Get you an original Ferguson shop manual. It tells you how to go thru the starter. They are very simple. A lot of the time the starters dragging is caused by the soldered connection inside the starter coming loose. It is caused by people tightening down the battery cable on the starter without using two wrenches. One to hold the nut on the stud and one to tighten the other nut down on the cable. That and extended cranking causing the stud to get hot and the solder to melt will cause it.I know there is a guy on eBay that sells the kits for the generators but I do not know if he sells the brush and bushing kits for the starters or not. I think he does. His name is triodiode. I went thru my starter last year myself on the back porch. It took about two hours and it made a world of difference. It does take a long soldering iron to be able to reach that connection on the inside.
