when converting to 12 volt system, do I need a resister for the coil? and do I need to reverse the wires in the coil, if anyone has some advise on doing such could you please enlighten me thank you

There are 2 solutions to the coil issue. Either add a resistor to the existing coil, or replace the coil with a 12v coil. Either way you want about 3 ohms resistance across the primary terminals.

With a negative ground system, you want the + terminal of the coil connected to the ignition switch, and the - terminal connected to the points.

I'm guessing on positive ground the terminals a different from what you said in your reply, will my points be ok if I would go to the 12 volt coil?

Points and condenser don't care whether 6 or 12 volt, positive or negative ground

Negative ground, - on coil to distributor
Positive ground, + on coil to distributor

Starter turns same direction regardless of ground.

thanks for answering, on the alternator there should be three wire right one to that goes to the battery to charge it and were does the other wires go?

Assuming you have the common Delco 3 wire alternator. Large stud on back is charge output, it goes to large hot battery wire usually connected at the starter solenoid/switch. If you have an ammeter, it goes through meter to starter switch. Light and ignition switches are powered from the alternator side of the ammeter.

#2 on edge plug is battery voltage sensing. It is commonly just looped down to the output stud.

#1 is excite or startup voltage. This is connected to the switched side of ignition switch. (same wire that goes to input of coil.)

This wire needs isolation or the tractor may continue to run when switch is turned off. Install a diode or "idiot light" between #1 pin and switch connection.

If using a diode use one rated at least 1.5 amp @ 50 volts. Higher amp or volt ratings are good. Marked end of the diode goes toward the alternator. Diodes are available at places like Radio Shack or an electronics repair shop.
