tractor battery

1957 TO35 with 12 volt, still has the generator charging system

When tractor has been setting awhile and was not used much before that, the battery will slowing go down.

I am charging the battery today, but I noticed some of that white chalky corrosion build up on the post and on the battery box frame. I have those round soft pads around each post that are suppose to help stop this corrosion buildup.

I keep dielectric grease on the post.

Any suggestions other than drive it more.

I do have a battery tender, maybe I need to keep that hooked on the battery.

Old tractor started today, but was slow turning over and it's 75 degrees. I always buy the battery with the most cca cold cranking amps that will fit in the battery box.
????????

Will check date (age) of battery, but I think I got it last year.

No problems starting when I was bush hogging.

I think those wooly pads are suppose to be kept wet with oil, then it would wick up to the terminals. I always wirebrush the lead and keep vasoline or axle grease all over them. I think it's just the nature of lead to react to weather-dampness, or dryness? more than an acid or electrical thing.

I must have a case of (sometimers Disease) some times I remember and sometimes I do not remember.

I checked and I bought the battery in 11/10

so in a month or so its going to be 4 years old and I think it was a 2 year battery.

duralast, their high cca hard service battery's do not have as long of a warranty. what I was told????

I agree with all of the posts, have you put a disconnect on the battery? This helps prevent loss due to "vampire" draw when cables are attached. Of course this is most common in modern vehicles with all of the electronics associated with them.

Using the pads help, dielectric grease helps too.

Hope the posts help.

Thanks guys for your response:

I think I will take the battery off and have a load test run on the battery.

Many times the load test will tell if the battery is near the end of its life cycle.

If so, I will just get a new battery as I hate to be charging the old one all the time.

As most of you know the voltage regulators we buy today just do not work as well as the old heavy duty delco Remy regulators of the past, to keep the battery charged with a generator charging system.

These are good for a quick disconnection of the battery , really reliable and cheap as well .
To get rid of the ''white fuzz'' mix one tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of hot water and wash the area , don't get it inside the battery though .

The old generator charging systems were known for zero draw while sitting. With a healthy battery that tractor will be able to sit for months and still have plenty enough charge to start.

A battery with chronic corrosion problems is a sign of a sick battery. Growing corrosion around the posts can be caused from the seal around the post being broken. The seal is most often broken from hammering the cable onto the post, or the batteries being stacked on top of each other during shipping. Look the posts over when you buy the battery, be sure they aren't broke loose from the case.

Thanks for the heads up on the new battery shipping
and storage issues, will check out the new battery.
