Stuck Bendix?

Static timing the ignition on the TO-20.

Tried to start - no start.

Working on figuring out what was wrong (probably condenser). BUT: after the engine didn't start, I was turning the engine by hand to get back to 7 degrees BTDC, and heard a grinding that I hadn't heard before.

It sounds like the noise is coming from the starter - when I cranked the engine, and it didn't start, could it have left the Bendix drive extended, and engaged with the flywheel teeth? Do I just need to pull the starter?

Side note: I've started the engine probably a dozen times over the past several weeks, with no problems. (Guess I shouldn't have messed with it! :oops: )
 
Your starter drive (proper name for a Bendix) probably is designed to stay engaged to the flywheel ring gear until the RPM of the drive is suffecient enough to release the latching mechanism which will cause the drive to disengage from the ring gear. The short answer is "it will disengage as soon as the engine starts"
 
There were a generator/starter shop in town that if you called a starter drive a bendix you would get a lecture on the proper nomenclature for the starter drive.
