engine question

I have a TO20. When I try to start it I just get a clunk sound. The fan moves a little bit but will not turn over. I can manually turn the crank counter clock wise with no problem. If I try to turn it clock wise it will stop a a certain point. I just put a new starter in it but that didnt work. Any ideas?? Thanks.

So when you replaced the starter, is that when the problem started? Was the old starter housing broken?

Where I'm going, is it possible something fell in the bell housing and is jamming the flywheel/pressure plate?

Nope it started before. I changed the starter because I took it to autozone and they said it was bad, I dont think it was.

It could still be something in the bell housing.
Might pull the starter and inspection cover, look
in with a flashlight, have someone turn the
engine and listen for something rattling around.

Assume you've tried holding down the clutch? Does
it feel normal?

Next would be to remove the timing cover, take a
look at the timing gears and oil pump.

Remove starter and check location of ring gear in relation to lip on flywheel.
Some early flywheels let the ring gear move rearwards and teeth would saw into the bell housing. This will prevent engine from rotating in normal direction but you can back it up if you are lucky.
