12 volt conversion

I have a 51" TO-30 that has the 12 volt conv. kit , purchased from this site , Neg. ground. with ballast resistor , coil with condenser and dist. w/ points. She keeps stalling after a minute or 2 when first started. Then sometimes will run fine. Getting gas , but stalling / shuts off like someone turned the key off. I have replaced the key switch as some have requested but no luck. I'm going to change over to a electronic ignition and a new coil , purchased from this site , and the question is , do I still need to use the ballast resisitor after new coil and ignition ?
If it doesn't work I'll go back to 6 volt positive ground !

Comments welcome , Thanks

Some coils don't have internal resister built in, this is when you use the external resister. The coil should have it printed on side if has internal resistor built in. Look at your coil to see which you have. I always use the internal resister coil.

Need to do some troubleshooting. When it quits do you still have 12V at the pos. post of the coil? Is there spark? How is the rest of the wiring on the tractor, grounds especially?
I've had fuel problems that seem just like someone turned the key off. They can be intermittent and drive you nuts too.
I too use the internal resistor coil and have had no problems with them.

If you bought the Pertronix high voltage coil you do not need a resistor. If you bought a standard 12 volt coil you should not need a resistor but will lose some of the benefit of the electronic ignition.

You will be very happy with the Pertronix Ignitor. Gone forever are the trouble some points and condenser - and probably your present problem of the engine cutting out.

Don't reverse polarity on the electronic ignition or it will get fried.

Unless your stalling problem is inside the
distributor, putting in electronic ignition will
not address it. Then if it doesn't run, you have
two problems and one will be masking the other.
This is much more difficult to solve.

Actually, there's NO such thing as an "internal resister coil" for 12 Volts.

Coils intended for 12 Volt use WITHOUT an external resistor are simply wound with more turns of wire in the primary winding.
