Ferguson TO 20 oil filter flow.

I've read a number of discussions on here regarding the various oil filters to use in the TO20, but upon close study of the placement of the suction tube of the oil pump, it appears to me that installing an oil filter on the center bottom cover retaining bolt is fruitless. The center retaining bolt is for just that, holding the bottom cover on. It is not hollow or have holes to allow oil to be drawn in to the oil pump. it is only a bolt with a female end to allow the retaining bolt for the bottom cover to thread into. The suction tube for the oil pump is off to the side of the center bolt. This means that when a smaller than original filter is slid onto the retaining bolt, no oil flow can go through the filter. The suction tube will draw unfiltered oil from the pan right past the filter. The only way this set up can work is if the filter was big enough to allow the suction tube to draw oil through the center of the filter. I see no other way for this to work.

As delivered from the factory Continental Z120
has the oil exiting the filter into the pan.
Least that is the way I thought it worked.

The suction pipe was never inside a filter, it is inside the screen that is around the filter but that's it. Oil comes down from the center main bearing through the tube in the center of the filter and exits a small hole in the side of the tube. The oil flows from the center of the filter outward. I think the idea was that with the oil coming out of the filter within the screen, the suction tube would pick up the cleanest oil in the pan just outside of the filter.

AH-HAH!!! Upon closer inspection of the center bolt on this tractor's oil filter set up, I found a spot where there was a hole that had been brazed shut. I melted the brass and blew it out revealing the hole as described. Now this all makes sense. In reality then the filtering is really a partial flow system as many of the older engines had. I"ll sleep better now. Many thanks guys!!!
