TO30 starter removal

I have a TO30 tractor that runs great... except that, as of yesterday, the starter turns but does not engage the flywheel.

I obviously need to either replace the starter, or the maybe only the starter drive.

But, it looks like it"s going to be very difficult (if not impossible) to remove the starter without also removing the distributor and possibly the ignition coil. I would really like to avoid affecting the ignition timing, as the tractor runs perfectly as it is.

So my question: is it possible to replace the starter without removing (or unbolting) the distributor? (The ignition coil isn"t such a big deal to remove and reinstall).

Thanks,

Jeff

On both my TO20 and TO30 removing the starter doesn't require removing anything else. One wire, two bolts and out it comes.

I think the TO30 is the same as TO35. Just loosen Bolts. Starter will angle down. Wiggle a little and it will slide out.

Thanks for all of the quick replies! I'm glad to hear that replacing the starter should be a quick and easy task.

I ordered a replacement starter from this site (need a running tractor ASAP!)

Thanks again,

Jeff

I recently replaced my starter on my 52 TO30. The old starter came out fine, but the new starter was a tad longer (for some unknown reason)and, like you, I did NOT want to pull the distributor. After lots of messing around, I did end up having to pull it to get the starter in. I did mark the distributor with a grease pencil so was able to get it pretty close with only minor tweeking to get the timing good. Sorry!!

Most all starters will bump into the horizontal bolt that locks the turn on the dist.I shortened that bolt and have no clearance issues.
