It should clear the distributor OK, it will tip up or down as it is pulled out. Never had to remove the coil or distributor on any I have worked on.

Thanks for all of the quick replies! I'm glad to hear that replacing the starter should be a quick and easy task.

I ordered a replacement starter from this site (need a running tractor ASAP!)

I recently replaced my starter on my 52 TO30. The old starter came out fine, but the new starter was a tad longer (for some unknown reason)and, like you, I did NOT want to pull the distributor. After lots of messing around, I did end up having to pull it to get the starter in. I did mark the distributor with a grease pencil so was able to get it pretty close with only minor tweeking to get the timing good. Sorry!!
