unexplained engine quiting

My TO-30 will usually start and run ok for a few minutes. Then it runs rough for a bit and the engine dies. After it dies the starter will crank but the engine will not fire. Often if I leave it for half an hour and come back it will fire up and run for a few minutes and the same pattern repeats.

Need to be ready to check it when the problem occurs.

Spark: Check the spark at the plugs, work your way back to the coil. Check the power to the coil, check the points and point gap, check the distributor shaft bushings.

Fuel: Have a wrench ready and pull the carb drain plug when it quits. If there is little or no fuel flow, the carb isn't getting gas. Could be a restricted sediment bowl screen, clogged fuel inlet at the carb, sticking float or needle valve, gas cap not vented, fuel line too close to the exhaust causing vaporlock.

Compression: Not likely, but tight valve lash can cause low compression when the engine comes up to temperature.

If it isn't electrical, it's probably a clog in the fuel line or carb. Pull line from carb and blow it out and check the elbow fitting in the carb. There is a filter inside there.

Remove drain from Carb and allow to run for 3 or 4 mins into a jug. If it keeps flowing then the fuel is OK. Change the Condenser as they often fail and it is the cheapest item, if it still fails to keep running try another Coil. If you have a multi-meter you can test the Coil.. John(UK)
