I have a ferguson to20. Battery in charged and I have 6 volts to the starter switch but when I engage gear shift I get very little on the starter terminal and starter will not engage. Also, I tried a battery charger on the starter and it will not do anything. Whats wrong

You can check the starter with jumper cables. Go from battery(tractor or your truck battery) with ground cable to frame(good ground) and hot cable from battery then touch starter post(nut) with hot cable. Be sure the TRACTOR IS NOT IN GEAR. If starter works its OK. Then look for other possible problems. Switch-Bad Cable --Ground. Or you will have a bad starter.

I have tried using a battery charger and all it does is spark and smoke. Will using jumpers be any different?

The battery charger can't supply enough amps to get the job done, so it's not a good test.

Use your volt meter to check where you do and don't have the voltage. Put the meter across the battery posts and hit the starter. If the volts stay up, move one volt meter lead to the next connection and try again. Once you find where the volts drop under load, that is where the problem is.

A prime suspect would be the starter switch, but test before replacing.

You got a manual? The starter switches on 20's and 30's have an adjustable linkage and mount to the inverted push button. Acts as a ramp to adjust the push length or depth? The bolts can vibrate loose, it travels down and you lost it entirely. Put it back in position and tighten them down.

I have tried jumper cables and it did nothing. I took the starter off and used a battery charger and it spins fine. I put the starter back on and it does nothing. Is the starter just to weak to spin it?

Ir reminds me trying to re-start my old Farmall after many years behind the barn, had same symptoms. Found there was a great amount of electrical resistance in the battery ground circuit, running through all the frame joints, etc.
I finally ran the battery ground strap directly over TO the starter, bolted it directly TO the starter mount bolt; PROBLEM PERMANENTLY SOLVED! Spins like a champ now.
