Coil for 12 volt TO-30

TO-30 converted to 12 volts, starts and runs good for 15 min. then dies slowly and won't start again for about 30 minutes. Appears to have no spark. Thinking coil. Bought tractor already converted to 12 volts. Can't read number on coil. We have NAPA here. Anyone know NAPA number for 12 volt coil for these tractors? Counter look-up for this type of thing is always iffy. Thanks in advance for help.

The coil should have internal resistor painted on side. With no internal resistor this is when you use the external add on. I've seen people use both for some reason. The coil with no internal resistor is always cheaper and a lot of people will buy it because of price.

Condenser is my hunch. We had a spell of bad ones talked about on here a couple years ago- and I had one that didn't last 2 weeks. $30 less than a coil too, worth a chance, since electrical items are non refundable..

Yes and No

on the napaonline site:
IC14 is an Echlin brand about $40

IC14SB is "Mileage Plus Electrical", probably an import. about $20

Should be electrically the same.

I've used several IC14SB and had good luck with them.

By the way coils DO NOT have internal separate resistors. Difference in 6 and 12 volt coils is in the the way the primary and secondary are wound.

I must lead a sheltered life - seen plenty of coils with a noise suppression capacitor attached but can't say I've seen a coil with a resistor attached since the 1960s?

Surely he just needs to buy a good [b:bb1a8ab6d2]12 volt[/b:bb1a8ab6d2] coil for around $15. I don't see what the resistance has to do with it? Even a high voltage output coil, which helps starting these old engines no end, is only around $35.
